#THIS INCLUDES THE VERY FIRST TIME SHE DOES IT AS A LITTLE#IM SO FUCKING UPSET DONT TOUCH ME#L EAVE ME ALONE IM GOING TO FUCKING COMBUST#there it is. the moment she realises that she isn’t good.#favourite#elsa’s hands are my favourite character
Elsa’s hands really are awesome in this movie though. All these are classic examples of self-comforting gestures. It’s body language indicative of someone who’s experiencing anxiety, nerves, stress ect.
Elsa’s hands are one of the main reasons I love the body language in this movie.
A lot of people will find that when they’re nervous, stressed or anxious, they’ll do actions similar (or exactly the same) as this without realising it.
And for her, it’s even more meaningful because her hands are where most her ice powers come from, so especially when she only has one glove or when she clutches her hands to her chest, it’s as if she’s trying to keep her powers in as well, to keep from hurting anyone.
That’s something I hadn’t actually considered, but you’re right.
Elsa’s powers are, metaphorically, a physical manifestation of her feelings. When she’s scared or anxious they go out of control, when she’s happy she creates massive structures, when she feels safe and loved, she can calm the ice.
With body language, hands are one of the most telling things. There’s this sort of… I don’t really know what to call it. A saying I guess. The further you get from your brain, the harder it is to control your actions consciously, so those parts of the body are the most telling. That’s why it’s hard to lie with your feet. So, the emotions you display are the most raw with hands and feet.
Because she primarily uses her hands to control the ice, it’s like her powers are a metaphorical extension of her arms, so it kinda makes sense that her powers are a manifestation of her emotions, if you consider that your hands are very telling.
When she displays self-comforting gestures primarily with her hands, it’s always one hand concealing the other. So she is, in sense, trying to conceal her powers by covering them, and because of the way she was raised, she’ll get comfort from trying to conceal her powers.
They are classic self-comforting gestures anyway, but I like how her powers add more depths into them, adding in that “conceal, don’t feel” even to her subconscious actions.
